* 모임 중에 무르익어가는 분위기를 깨는 것을 보고 우리말로 흔히 [찬물을 끼얹다]라고 하는데 이에 해당하는 영어표현이 바로 throw a wet blanket 입니다... 원래 불을 끄려고 물을 적신 모포를 던진다는데서 유래된 말로, 요즘말로 [분위기를 썰렁하게 한다]는 표현...
* wet blanket = (informal) someone who tries to spoil other people's fun
* spoilsport = someone who spoils other people's fun
Ross : How was your trip? 여행 어땠니?
Tim : It was awful, I spent the whole time cooped up in a tiny apartment with three jerks.
형편없었어. 줄곧 코딱지만한 작은 아파트 안에서 형편없는 놈들 세명하고 갇혀 지냈어.
Ross : Oh, well, Now you're back home. And I've made reservations at the Hilton Hotel for dinner.
아, 그러니, 그래도 이제 집에 돌아왔으니 힐튼 호텔에 저녁식사를 예약해 놓았는데.
Tim : I'm not really in the mood to go out. I'm so tired.
정말 밖에 나가고 싶지 않아. 너무 피곤하다구.
Ross : Why do you have to always throw a wet blanket on my plans?
넌 꼭 내 계획에 찬물을 끼얹어야만 하겠니?
Tim : I'm sorry. Just let me get a couple of hours of rest and then we'll go for dinner.
미안. 두 시간만 쉬게 해줘. 그리고 나서 저녁먹으러 가자.
Kate : Tim and Ross are brothers? I can't believe it. 로스와 팀이 형제라고? 믿어지지 않아.
Karen : Why do you say that? 왜요?
Kate : Because they are so different. Tim is the life and soul of the party, while Ross is the wet blanket.
그 두 사람은 너무 달라서. 팀은 사람들을 즐겁게 해주는 타입인데 반해 로스는 흥을 깨는 타입이거든.
* be the life and soul of the party = to make people feel happy by talking a lot, telling jokes etc
eg) Don't invite him again. Remember what a wet blanket he was on the last picnic.
다시는 그를 초대하지 말아. 지난 번 소풍 때 얼마나 흥을 깼냐.
Ross : I'd rather take a nap than play tennis. 테니스치느니 낮잠이나 자야겠다.
Tim : Don't be a spoilsport. 분위기 깨지마.
eg) Don't be a spoilsport. We can't play without you. 분위기 깨지마. 너없이 경기를 할 수 없잖아
She asked for the moon
* ask for the moon 은 비현실적인 요구를 하면서 [억지를 부리거나 떼를 쓰는](ask for too much)이라는 표현...
* ask for the moon = to ask for something that is difficult or impossible to obtain
Tim : I'm so pissed off at my girlfriend. 여자친구 때문에 열받아 죽겠어.
Ross : Why? What did she do to you? 왜? 너한테 뭘 어떻게 했길래?
Tim : She's so possessive and demanding. 소유욕도 강하고 요구하는 것도 지나쳐.
Ross : Sounds like my last girlfriend. She practically asked for the moon.
옛날 내 여자친구같구만. 그앤 정말 얼토당토않은 요구만을 해댔지.
Tim : If she keeps acting like such a bitch, I think I'm going to end it with her.
계속 그렇게 못되게 굴면 걔랑 끝장낼거야.
Ross : That's what I did. 나도 그렇게 했지.
eg) We're not aking for the moon, 우리는 말도 안되는 요구를 하는 것이 아닙니다.
* moon은 [비현실성][몽상]이란 의미를 함축하고, 동사로는 꿈같은 상태로 [몽상을 하다]라는 뜻...
Let me give you a hand
* a hand = help with something you are doing, especially something that involves physical work
Kate : I have to carry all these boxes in from the car.
이 상자들을 차에서 꺼내 안으로 옮겨야 해.
Tim : Let me give you a hand. 내가 도와줄게.
Kate : Thanks. This is too much for one person. 고마워. 한사람이 하기에 너무 무리야.
Tim : It sure seems like it. We'll have this done in no time.
정말 그렇게 보여. 같이 하면 금방 해낼 수 있을거야.
Ross : I'm rearranging the furniture. I'm glad you stopped in. Give me a hand, will you?
가구를 재배치 중인데 마침 잘 들렸네. 좀 도와줘.
Tim : Okay. I sure did well to drop by, didn't I? 그러지. 정말 들르길 잘했네.
Tim : Hey, Kate! Give me a hand! Come on! 케이트! 좀 도와줘! 어서!
Kate : What's wrong this time? 이번엔 무슨 일이야?
Tim : This washing machine won't work. I did as you told me, but it won't work.
세탁기가 작동을 안해. 니가 가르쳐준 대로 했는데, 작동이 안되네.
Kate : All you have to do is switch it on. Let me do it. It would be easier to do it myself.
그냥 스위치만 켜면 돼. 그냥 놔둬. 차라리 내가 하는게 낫겠어.
Mariah : Looks like you are in quite a hurry. 너 진짜 급해 보인다.
Ross : As a matter of fact, I am. 사실 그래.
I've got to have this report finished by noon and there are some other things to take care of.
정오까지 이 보고서를 끝내야하거든. 그리고 처리해야할 다른 일들이 있어.
Mariah : Well, would you like a hand with some things that you've got to do?
그래, 니가 해야할 일들을 좀 도와줄까?
eg) It's really heavy. Can you give me a hand? 이거 진짜 무겁다. 좀 도와줄 수 있니?
eg) Tell me if you need a hand. 도움이 필요하면 말해.
That goes without saying
* 이 표현을 직역해보면 [그것은 말하지 않아도 간다] 그러니까 [당연하지!]라는 의미가 되네요...
* used to say that something is so obvious that it does not need to be said
Tim : I'm going to eat Italian food for lunch, if you're interested.
괜찮다면 점심으로 이탈리아 음식을 먹으러 가고 싶은데.
Kate : That goes without saying, I'm always ready for pasta.
물론, 파스타라면 언제라도 좋아.
eg) It goes without saying that he will be elected president of the society.
그가 회장에 선출될 것은 두말할 필요가 없다.
I'll pass
Kate : Would you like a piece of pumpkin pie for dessert? 후식으로 호박파이 먹을래?
Mariah : Thanks, but I'll pass. 고맙지만 난 됐어.
Tim : It is a sea cucumber. Try it. It'll whet your appetite.
이거 해삼인데 먹어봐. 식욕이 생길거야.
Kate : Thank you but I'll pass. I'm afraid it'll spoil my dinner.
고맙지만 사양할게요. 저녁 입맛을 버릴까봐요.
Tim : Are you going to go hiking with us on Saturday? 토욜에 하이킹 갈래?
Ross : No. Count me out. I'm too tired. 아니 난 빼줘. 너무 피곤해서.
Tim : Did you feel like some sweetpotato cake? 고구마 케이크 좀 먹을래?
Kate : No, I'll pass. I should watch my weight. 아니, 안 먹을래. 체중 조절을 해야 하거든.
Ross : How about a drink before dinner? 저녁 먹기 전에 한잔 할까?
Tim : Thanks but I'll pass. 고맙지만 사양할게
