특별한 생선요리는 언제 다 될까? 손님들이 왔는데.
Kate : Be patient! It's taking longer than I expected.
좀 기다려요! 생각보다 시간이 많이 걸리네요.
eg) Don't be so impatient. Hang in there! 조급히 굴지 말고, 좀 인내심을 가지고 기다려라!
eg) I'm coming. Don't be so impatient! 가고 있으니까 너무 조급하게 굴지마.
There you go again
Tim : I'm sorry but I'm going to be late for our date. I am stuck in traffic.
미안한데, 우리 데이트하는 데 좀 늦을 것 같아. 길이 막혀서 말야.
Kate : There you go again, making excuses for your lateness. Why don't you admit you forgot?
또 시작이네. 늦게 와서 핑계를 늘어놓으려고. 그냥 깜빡 잊었다고 인정하는게 어때?
Tim : That's not nice. I didn't forget, I'm just stuck in traffic.
그건 불공평해. 난 깜박 잊은 게 아니라, 길이 막혀서 그러는 거라니까!
* be stuck in traffic은 [길이 막혀서 꼼짝 못하다]라는 표현...
Tim : Honey! Don't be a couch potato. 여보! TV 좀 그만 봐요!
Kate : There you go again! 또 잔소리 시작이군.
eg) There you go complaining again. 또 불평이네.
You're like one of the family
Tim : Can I stay at your house for a few days? 며칠동안 너네 집에 머물러도 될까?
Kate : Of course. You're like one of the family. 물론, 넌 우리 식구나 마찬가지야.
Tim : Thanks. That means a lot to me. 고마워. 정말 나에겐 의미가 크다.
Kate : I'd do anything to help you. 널 도울 수 있는 일이라면 뭐든지 할거야.
* 그럼 [넌 내 아들이나 마찬가지야]라는 표현은 이렇게... You're like a son to me
* 반대로 [넌 집안의 말썽꾸러기야]라는 표현은 You're the black sheep of the family
Deep down
* deep down이라는 표현은 마음 속의 솔직한 감정을 털어놓거나, 표면적인 진실 밑바닥에 숨어있는 정보를 언급하면서 사용하는 표현...
* if someone is good, evil etc deep down, that is what they are really like even though they usually hide it
Ross : Are you happy with the way you are living your life? 너는 사는 데 만족하니?
Tim : Not really. Deep down, I want to do something more meaningful.
별로 안그래. 사실은 말이지. 좀 더 의미 있는 일을 하고 싶어.
life has no direction. 삶엔 지표라는 게 없어.
Ross : Yeah, but you are doing a service for others that is helping them feel happy.
그렇구나. 하지만 넌 다른 사람들이 만족스러워 하도록 돕는 일을 하고 있는거잖아.
eg) Deep down, I want to get rid of her. 내 본심은 그와 헤어지고 싶어.
eg) Ross may seem unfriendly, but deep down he's very nice.
로스는 친절해 보이진 않지만 본심은 좋은 사람이야.
eg) They often don't see eye to eye, but deep down they both love each other very much.
그들은 항상 티격태격하지만 본심으로는 서로 아주 사랑하고 있어.
What on earth is that?
* on earth 는 의문문에 쓰기는 하나 감탄문 느낌이 강한 표현... 즉, 강조할 때 많이 사용...
* what/why/who on earth...? = (spoken) used when you are asking a question about something that you are very surprised or annoyed about
* in the world = used to emphasize a statement you are making
Ross : Hey, take a look at my new pet! 이봐, 내 새 애완동물 좀 봐!
Mariah : What on earth is that? I've never seen anything like it before!
도대체 이게 뭐야? 이런 건 처음 봐!
Ross : It's a Chinchillia. 친칠라야.
Mariah : Well, that's the first time I've ever seen one. 와, 이런 걸 보는 건 처음이야.
Ross : This copy machine is driving me crazy. 이 복사기 때문에 정말 미치겠어.
Tim : Paper jam again? I've got a bunch of papers to make copies.
또 종이가 걸린거야? 나 복사할 거 많은데.
Ross : What on earth is wrong with this machine? 도대체 이 복사기는 뭐가 문제야?
It's been barely a month since we bought it. 산지 겨우 한 달밖에 안됐잖아.
Tim : We'd better find Kate right away. She's the only person who can save us.
당장 케이트를 찾아보는 게 좋겠다. 그녀만이 우릴 구해줄 수 있어.
Ross : You're absolutely right. She's a real jack-of-all-trades.
니 말이 맞다. 케이트는 정말 뭐든지 잘 고치지.
Kate : I'm really putting on weight. So I'm trying to cut down a bit.
몸무게가 늘고 있어. 좀 줄여야겠어.
Tim : What on earth for? You're skinny. 왜 그래? 넌 너무 말랐어.
Ross : What in the world is that? 그게 도대체 뭐야?
Tim : It's my bottle collection. 내가 모은 병 수집품들이야.
Tim : Where in the world is that pizza? It's been over an hour since we ordered it.
도대체 피자는 어떻게 된 거야? 주문한 지가 1시간이 넘었는데.
Kate : I'd better call and find out what's going on. 전화를 걸어서 어떻게 된 건지 알아봐야 겠어.
Tim : Tell them if they can't deliver in half an hour we want to cancel the order.
30분 이내에 배달하지 않으면 주문을 취소하겠다고 말해.
