* (spoken) used when you want someone to tell you something unpleasant directly
Kate : Is something wrong? You've looked upset all day long.
무슨 일 있어? 하루종일 기분이 안 좋아 보이는데.
Tim : I have some bad news for you. but I don't know how to say it.
너한테 안 좋은 소식이 있는데 어떻게 말해야 할지 모르겠어.
Kate : Give it to me straight. Just let me know what the problem is.
사실대로 말해줘. 무슨 문제인지 말해봐.
Tim : I lost your car keys and don't know where they are.
네 자동차 열쇠를 잃어버렸는데 어디 있는지 모르겠어.
Ross : Did you finish the assignment? 임무는 다 끝냈어?
Mariah : Well, you see I had a slight problem. 저, 문제가 좀 있어요.
Ross : Give it to me straight. Don't give me any excuses or reasons.
솔직히 털어 놓고 말해봐. 핑계나 이유는 대지 말고.
You don't have to beat around the bush
* beat around the bush는 구어에서 [대화 중 이야기의 핵심을 밝히지 않다][요점을 말하지 않다]라는 의미... 즉 [돌려서 말한다]란 얘기죠...
* beat around the bush = to avoid or delay talking about something embarrassing or unpleasant
Master : May I ask what you are getting at?
뭘 말씀하시려고 하는데요?
You don't have to beat around the bush, just say it.
돌려서 말씀하지 말고, 그대로 이야기해 보세요.
Kate : Sure. All I want to know is if it's possible to expect any reduction on these prices.
그러죠. 내가 알고 싶은 건 단지 이 물건가격을 좀 할인해 주실 수 있는냐하는 거죠.
Master : I'm afraid it's not. These are really bottom prices.
그건 안되겠는데요. 이 가격은 실제로 최저가격입니다.
Karen : Don't beat around the bush. Get to the point. 돌려서 말하지 말고 요점을 말해주세요.
Ross : Ok. The long and the short of it is that you are short on experience.
좋아. 요점은 네가 경험이 부족하다는 거야.
Karen : I get the message. 무슨 뜻인지 알겠어요.
* the long and the short of it = (spoken) used when you are trying to tell someone something complicated in only a few words
* be short on = (informal) to have less of something than you should have
* get the message = (informal) to understand what someone means or what they want you to do
Tim : Will you stop beating around the bush? 그만 돌려서 말해라.
Mariah : All right. I'll get to the point. 좋아요. 요점을 말씀드리죠.
eg) Don't beat around the bush. Let's get to the heart of the problem.
이리저리 돌려말하지 마. 문제의 핵심을 말하자고.
eg) Stop beating around the bush and tell me why you're here.
돌려서 말하는 건 그만두고, 네가 여기에 왜 있는 지를 말해 봐.
eg) He always beats around the bush so much that no one in the office knows exactly what he wants us to do.
그는 항상 빙 돌려 말해서 사무실의 그 누구도 뭘 지시하는 지 잘 알지 못한다.
I didn't know if I was coming or going
* 이 표현을 직역하면 [내가 갔었는지 왔었는지 모르겠어] 정도로 해석 되니 얼마나 정신이 없었으면...
Kate : I'm so glad this week is over with. 이번 주가 다 지나가서 정말 기쁘다.
If I ever have a week this hectic again it'll be too soon.
이렇게 정신없이 바쁘고 골치아픈 주는 제발 두번 다시 오지 않았으면 좋겠다.
Mariah : I know whatcha mean. Most days I didn't know if I was coming or going.
이해하겠네요. 난 거의 매일 너무 정신이 없어 뭘 하는지도 몰랐다니까요.
Kate : Well, now that all those problems got ironed out maybe we can take a day off.
자, 이제 모든 문제가 다 해결되었으니까 하루쯤 쉬어도 될거야.
* iron out 은 [(곤란문제 등을) 제거하다, 해결하다]라는 의미...
My mind is on a different planet
Tim : What's that smell coming from the kitchen? Did you empty out the trash this morning?
부엌에서 무슨 냄새가 나는 것 같은데? 너 오늘 아침에 쓰레기통 비웠어요?
Ross : Oops! Sorry. My mind is on a different planet today.
앗 미안, 내가 오늘 정신이 나갔나보군.
Tim : Again? What's going on with you lately? 또? 너 요즘 왜 그래요?
I lost track of time
Tim : Oh, no! Is it that late? Now I can't get down there in time.
아니, 벌써 시간이 그렇게 되었나? 이젠 제 시간에 거기에 도착할 수 없겠는데.
I was so absorbed in this new project that I lost track of time.
새로운 프로젝트에 너무 열중해 있다 보니까 시간 가는 줄 몰랐네.
Kate : It's only twenty till six. What are you so worried about?
5시 40분밖에 안 됐는데, 뭐가 그렇게 걱정이 된다는 거야?
Tim : Well, I'm supposed to be downtown at six to meet a client.
아, 6시에 시내에서 고객과 만나기로 되어 있거든.
Maybe I can still catch her before she leaves. Hand me the cell quick.
어쩌면 아직 출발하기 전이라서 전화로 연락이 될 수도 있을거야. 핸드폰 빨리 줘봐.
Tim : Do you have the time? 몇 시냐?
Karen : Sorry I don't have a watch. I guess it should be about 11.
시계가 없는데. 아마 11시쯤 되었을 거에요.
Tim : 11 already? I have lost track of the time talking with you.
벌써 11시라고? 너랑 얘기하느라고 시간가는 줄 몰랐네.
Karen : Do you have time for a cup of coffee? 커피 한잔 할 시간은 있어요?
Tim : I'm afraid not. I gotta be going. 없을 것 같아. 나 가봐야겠어.
Kate : I sure am ready for the weekend. All I'm going to do is relax and get comfortable by the TV.
얼른 주말이 오면 좋겠다. 텔레비젼 옆에서 편히 쉬고 싶은 생각 뿐이다.
Ross : What day is today? Isn't it only Thursday?
오늘이 무슨 요일이지? 겨우 목요일밖에 안돼잖아?
The weekend's still far away. We have two days left till the weekend.
그럼 주말은 한참 멀었는데. 이틀이나 남았으니까?
Kate : No, it's Friday. You've been so busy that you lost track of time.
아냐, 오늘은 금요일이야. 너 너무 바쁘다보니 시간가는 줄도 모르는구나.
eg) It's 3 o'clock already? I have lost track of time talking with you.
벌써 3시야? 너와 이야기 하느라고 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다.
Tim : I can never seem to keep track of time these days. 요즘은 시간 감각이 없는 것 같아.
Mariah : Are you that busy nowadays? 요즘 그렇게 바쁘세요?
