* bark up the wrong tree = (informal) to have a wrong idea, especially about how to get a particular result
eg) You're barking up the wrong tree. Kate won't lend you any money.
너 헛수고하고 있어. 케이트는 네게 돈을 빌려주지 않을거야.
eg) You're barking up the wrong tree if you think Ross can help you.
로스가 널 도와줄 거라고 생각한다면 헛다리 짚는거야.
Tim : I think I'll never see the money I lent Ross again.
로스에게 빌려준 돈을 또 못 받을 것 같아.

Kate : Forget it. Let bygones be bygones. 잊어버려. 과거는 과거니 잊어버려.

어제 집에 잘 들어갔어? 눈 땜에 퇴근길이 완전히 엉망이 되었던데.
Tim : That's not the worst of it. My neighborhood is on top of a steep hill.
그건 약과였어. 내가 사는 동네가 가파른 언덕 꼭대기에 있거든.
I had to park down below and walk to my house.
차를 언덕 아래에 주차시키고 집까지는 걸어 올라갔거든.
위 표현을 직역하면 [그게 최악의 상황은 아니었다] 즉 [더 나쁜 일이 있었다]라는 의미입니다...

Tim : Hey, how's the party decoration coming along? 이봐, 파티 꾸미는 건 어떻게 돼가니?
Mariah : Oh, just great. I'm so excited. 오, 아주 잘 되어가고 있어요. 전 무지 기대돼요.
Tim : I don't mean to rain on your parade, but don't you think the polka-dot tablecloth is too much?
네 기분에 초치려는 건 아닌데, 물방울무느 테이블보는 너무 심하다고 생각하지 않냐?
eg) You rained on my parade. 너 때문에 오늘 하루는 망쳤어.
