How come?
* How come 의 come 은 [어떤 일이 발생하다][...한 상태로 되다]라는 뜻. 따라서 [어떻게 해서 그렇게 됐냐?][왜 그렇느냐?]라는 말이 된다. How come 은 뒤에 문장을 덧붙여서 표현할 수도 있다...
* (spoken) used to ask why something has happened or been said, especially when you are surprised by it
* what for? = (spoken) why?
Tim : I'm sorry, but I have to leave now. 미안하지만, 이제 가야겠어.
Mariah : How come? 왜요?
Tim : I just remembered. I'm expecting an important phone call. I have to go home.
방금 생각이 났는데요. 중요한 전화가 올 게 있어서 집에 가봐야 해요.
Mariah : That's too bad. I was enjoying your visit. 이거 섭섭한데요. 와 주셔서 즐거웠는데.

Tim : Oh, darn. I think I'm going to have to skip breakfast this morning.

Kate : How come, honey? I thought you were really hungry.

Tim : I am, but I just remembered that we were supposed to have a special meeting.
배고파, 그러나 특별모임이 있었다는 게 막 기억났어.

Tim : What for? 왜?

Ross : We want to give this award to you, Tim. 팀, 자네에게 이 상을 주겠네.
Tim : What for? 왜?
Ross : For all the ways you've helped us over the years. We really appreciate it.

I couldn't care less!
* couldn't care less = (spoken) used to say rudely that you do not care at all about something
* matter = to be important to you personally or to have a big effect on what happens
Kate : I saw your ex-boyfriend with a cute blond the other day.
며칠 전에 네 옛 남자친구가 귀여운 금발머리 애랑 있는 거 봤다.
Mariah : I couldn't care less! I have a terrific new guy!
상관없어! 나도 멋진 새 남자친구가 있잖아!

Kate : It doesn't matter, there's another one in 10 minutes.

I don't give a damn
* not give a damn = (spoken) used to show that you do not care about something
* don't give a hoot = (spoken) used when saying that you do not care about something at all
Tim : Aren't you late for work? 직장에 늦지 않았니?
Ross : I don't give a hoot. I'm going to quit next week, anyway.
상관없어. 어차피 다음주면 그만둘건데 뭐.
Ross : Gosh, my girlfriend just saw me kissing Mariah. What should I do now?
젠장, 내 여자친구가 내가 마리아랑 키스하는 걸 방금 봤어. 난 이제 어쩌지?
Tim : Frankly, I don't give a hoot. 솔직히, 내가 알 바 아냐.

* 이 표현은 [절대로 신경 쓰지 마세요][염려하지 마세요]라고 상대를 안심시키는 표현...
* (spoken) used to say that something is not important or serious, especially when someone seems worried or is saying sorry to you
Kate : I'll get my husband to drive you to the subway station.
남편한테 부탁해서 지하철역까지 모셔다 드릴게요.
Ross : Never mind. I can get around by myself. 신경쓰지 마세요. 나 혼자 갈 수 있어요.
Kate : You can? Are you sure? 그래요? 정말이에요?
Ross : Yes. I know my way around this town. 그럼요. 이 지역 지리 알아요.
Kate : But you got lost last time you were here.

Kate : You can say that again! I'd enjoy seeing it again.

Tim : Wow, I can't believe how good you are with children! 와~ 너 애들을 참 잘 다루는구나!
Kate : Well. What can I say? I'm a born baby-sitter.

Tim : You can say that again! 네 말이 맞아!
Kate : Hey, hey, why is your face blushing like that?
