Kate : Do you think it will rain tomorrow? 내일 비가 올 것 같아?
Tim : I'll bet. 틀림없이 올거야.
Tim : I bet Ross will never come up for this meeting. 로스는 틀림없이 이 회의에 안 나올거야.
Kate : Are you sure? 확실해요?
Tim : I'm positive. I'll bet you 100 bucks. 그럼. 백불 걸지.
Kate : Oh, yeah? What makes you so sure? 그래요? 왜 그렇게 확신해요?
Tim : He said so to me last night. 어젯밤 그가 나에게 그렇게 말했거든.
Tim : Do you know whatever happened to Mariah? 마리아가 어떻게 지내는 줄 알아?
Ross : I haven't heard from her in years. 몇년전부터 그녀와 소식이 끊어졌어.
Tim : I hope she is doing well. 잘 지냈으면 좋겠는데.
Ross : I bet she is. We don't need to worry. 틀림없이 그녀는 잘 지낼거야. 걱정할 필요 없어.
Tim : This traffic is all backed up this evening. 오늘 저녁에는 길이 꽉 막히네.
Do you have any idea what's going on? 무슨 일이 있는지 알아?
Kate : It's high school commencement night. 고등학교 졸업식이 있는 날이야.
I'm sure there's a traffic jam at the high school. 고등학교쪽 길이 막혀 있을 거야.
Tim : Yeah. I'll bet you're right. Well, let's go another way and avoid the school.
그래. 니 말이 맞아. 자, 그럼, 학교를 피해서 다른 길로 가자고.
Tim : Can you sense the excitement in the air? 흥분감이 느껴지지 않니?
Mariah : You bet! I wish the concert would start soon.
그럼요! 빨리 공연이 시작됐으면 좋겠어요.
Tim : I can't believe it's been 10 years since we graduated from university, Ross.
로스, 우리가 대학 졸업한 지가 벌써 10년이 됐네.
Ross : Time sure flies. 세월 한번 빠르네.
When I look back over the years, I don't know where they've all gone to.
과거를 돌이켜 보면 그 세월이 다 어리로 갔는지 모르겠어.
Tim : Me either. 나도 모르겠어.
They say time goes faster the older you get and now I believe it.
왜 그런말 있잖아. 나이가 들면 세월도 더 빠르게 지나간다고. 나도 이제 실감하겠어.
Tim : How time flies! Christmas is just around the corner.
얼마나 세월이 빠른지! 벌써 성탄절이 코앞이야.
Kate : Time is really dragging for me. 나한테는 정말 세월이 안가는데.
Tim : Did you know that today marks our first anniversary of working together?
오늘이 우리가 함께 일한 지 꼭 일년이 되는 날이라는 거 알고 있었어?
Kate : That's right. Time just flies, doesn't it? 맞아. 세월 정말 빠르지?
eg) Is it May already? How time flies! 벌써 5월이야? 시간 정말 빨리 지나가네.
eg) How quickly all the years have gone by! 세월이 얼마나 빨리 지나갔는지!
Mariah : How's your day going? 오늘 어때?
Ross : It's just a humdrum day. How about you? 따분한 하루야. 너는 어때?
Mariah : Same here. Time is really dragging for me. 똑같아. 시간이 너무 안가네.
Tim : Where have you been, Ross? 로스 어디 있었어?
I must have looked around the tearoom for the last 5 minutes.
내가 분명히 5분 동안은 찾았을거야.
Ross : Well, I've been here all the time. You must have looked right through me.
저런, 나는 줄곧 여기 있었는데, 못 보고 지나친 모양이네.
Tim : Oh, did I? I guess I wasn't paying enough attention.
아, 그랬나? 내가 주의깊게 살피지 못한 모양이네.
I apologize for being short with you. 너한테 퉁명스럽게 말한 것 용서해.
* look through 는 [못보고 지나치다]라는 의미이고, short 는 [퉁명스러운][쌀쌀한] 이라는 의미...
Kate : Where have you been all the time? 내내 어디 갔었어?
Tim : Look, I was only gone for twenty minutes. 이봐, 20분 자리를 비웠을 뿐이야.
Ross : Where have you been? We've been looking all over for you.
어디 갔었어? 하루 종일 찾았잖아.
Tim : I was home all day. 하루 종일 집에 있었어.
Mariah : Is your stomach growling, Ross? Didn't you eat lunch yet?
로스, 니 배에서 꼬르륵 소리가 나네? 아직 점심식사 안했니?
Ross : No, not yet. 응, 아직 안했어.
I've been so absorbed in my work here I haven't even thought about it.
일에 너무 몰두하다 보니까, 식사할 생각조차 안나네.
Mariah : Well, how about if I order some lunch? 점심을 배달해 달라고 주문할까?
No, better still, why don't you go out for lunch? You need a break.
아, 아니지. 나가서 식사하지 그래? 좀 쉬기도 해야하니까.
* be absorbed in 은 [...에 열중하다]라는 표현이고, better still 에서 still 은 비교급을 강조하기 위해 사용된 것..
eg) I'm hungry to death. My stomach is growling.
배고파 죽겠다. 배에서 꼬르륵 소리가 나네.
Tim : Let's call it a day. We'll study Chapter 3 tomorrow. Don't forget to preview it.
오늘은 이만 하자. 내일은 3장을 공부할 거야. 미리 읽어보는 거 잊지 마.
Mariah : Yes. See you tomorrow. 네. 내일 봐요.
eg) We have accomplished a great deal today. Let's call it a day.
오늘 일 많이 했다. 오늘은 그만 합시다.
eg) I'm too tied to play another game. Let's call it a day.
이제 피곤해서 더 게임 못하겠다. 오늘은 여기까지 하자.
