名 詞 (Noun) Ⅰ
1. 명사의 종류: 고유, 보통, 집합, 물질, 추상명사
① 셀 수 있는 명사 : 단,복수 가능
many, few로 수식. 보통, 집합명사.
② 셀 수 없는 명사 : 단,복수 없음.
much, little 이 수식. 물질, 고유, 추상명사.
2. 종족 대표 : 어떤 종족의 전체.
① A(an) + 단수보통명사.(대표단수)
A horse is a useful animal.
② The + 단수보통명사. (대표단수)
The horse is a useful animal.
③ 복수보통명사. (대표복수)
Horse are useful animal.
3. The + 단수보통명사 = 추상명사
* The pen is mightier than the sword.
4. 집합명사와 군집명사
* The audience was a large one.
* The audience were deeply impressed
군집명사:복수동사 were, 개별적으로 깊은 감명.
◇ 하나의 집합체 : 집합명사
개별적으로 취급 : 군집명사 → 복수동사
5. consist of
* My class consist of sixty students.
is composed of
is made up of
comprises → 타동사이므로 of 사용 못함.
= ∼으로 구성되다.
6. 항상 복수 취급되는 집합명사
① Police형
* The police (경찰들) → a policeman (경찰 한사람)
The clergy (성직자들) → a clergyman (성직자)
The nobility (귀족들) → a nobleman (귀족)
The peasantry (농민들) → a peasant (농민 한사람)
→ ∼등의 집합 명사는 부정관사도 못 붙이고 복수형으로도
쓰지 않으며 보통 the와 함께 쓰여 복수 취급.
② Cattle형
: Cattle, People, Poultry, vermin은 단지 약간 수의 모임이며, 집합
의 한계가 없으므로 관사도 안붙고 복수형도 없이 그대로 복수 취급
되어 복수동사를 받는다.
* Cattle are grazing in the pasture
◇part, portion, half, the rest, the majority, most, the bulk 등
은 뒤에오는 말에 따라 그 수가 결정된다.
* The rest of the boys are playing baseball.
③ Family형
Nation, Army, People, Party 등은 집합의 한계가 명료하며, 또한
집합체를 단위로 셀 수 있으므로 단,복수 가능.
◇ many people (많은 사람들), some people (어떤 사람들)처럼
people이 "사람들"의 뜻으로서 군집명사로 쓰일 땐 복수 취급을 하
며 복수동사를 사용한다. 그러나 people이 국민, 민족의 뜻
으로 쓰일 땐 집합명사로 단수 취급을 한다.
* many people = 많은 사람들. many peoples = 많은 민족들.
people = 사람들 (군집) a peoples = 하나의 민족 (집합)
two people = 두개의 민족들 (집합)
7. 집합적 물질명사
* furniture(가구), clothing(의류), merchandise(상품), produce(농산물),
game(사냥감), baggage(소포).
위의 단어는 물건의 집합체이지만 양을 나타내는 물질 명사로 취급.
◇ 집합적 물질명사는
①부정관사 a, an을 붙일 수 없다. (물질명사이므로)
②항상 단수취급을 하므로 단수동사
③양을 나타내는 much, little로 수식
④하나, 둘 셀 때 → a piece of ∼ , an article of ∼
8. 물질명사의 보통명사화
①제품을 나타낼 때
* Glass is apt to break. 유리→물질명사
* He has a glass in his hand. 유리잔→보통명사
+- paper(종이) → 물질 +- copper(구리) → 물질
+- the paper(서류, 신문) → 보통 +- a copper(동전한닢) → 보통
②구체적으로 셀 수 있는 개체
* The bridge is built of stone. 돌 → 물질
* The boy picked up a stone. 돌멩이 → 보통
③종류를 나타낼 때
* Wine is made from grapes. 술 → 물질
* This is a good wine for health. 좋은 술 → 보통
* They sell various wines at that store. 여러가지 술 → 보통
④사건을 나타낼 때 (구체적 현상)
* Fire burns wood. 불 → 물질명사
* They was a fire last night. 화재 → 보통
⑤물질명사가 한정이 될 때는 정관사 the를 사용.
* Water is turned into steam by heat. → 물질명사
* The water in this glass is not good to drink. (유리잔 속에 한정된 물)
9. 고유명사의 보통명사화
①국민 한사람, 가족, ∼의 집안 사람의 뜻일 때
* He is a swiss. 스위스 사람.
* His father is a Lincoln. 링컨 가문의 사람.
* The Bakers loved to entertain others. 베이커씨 부부.
◇The + 고유명사 복수형 : Baker씨 일가족
Baker씨 부부.
② ∼라는 사람 (a certain)의 뜻.
* A Mr. Lee called you up in your absence.
③제품,작품을 나타낼 때
* He bought a Ford. 포드 자동차 한대.
* There are two Rembrandts in the gallery. 두점의 렘브런트 작품.
④ ∼과 같은 사람, 사물(성질을 나타냄)을 나타낼 때
* A Newton cannot become a Shakespeare.
* He is the Newton of the age. 형용사구. (당대의)
◇고유명사 다음에 형용사구가 와서 수식이 되는 경우에는 부정관사
a, an 대신 반드시 정관사 the를 사용.
10. 추상명사의 보통명사 및 집합명사화
: 종류, 구체적행동, 어떤 성질의 소유자를 나타낼 때.
* He was wild in his youth. 추상(청춘시절)
* He is an ambitious youth. 청년 - 보통명사.
* Youth should respect age. 젊은이 - 집합. 늙은이들.
* She has beauty and intelligence. 추상.
* She was once a beauty. 미인 - 보통.
* The beauty of the scenery is beyond description.
◇of the scenery 라는 형용사구에 한정되므로 The beauty.
* Happiness consists in contentment. 추상.
* I now have the happiness of being with you.
♧형용사구로 수식되므로 the happiness.
한정된 행복이므로 the happiness.
11. 물질명사의 수량표시
* a piece of bread : 빵 한조각. * a glass of milk : 우유 한.잔
slice toast : 토스트 한조각. water : 물 한잔.
* a lump of sugar : 설탕 한덩어리. * a shoal of fish : 물고기 한마리.
pound : 설탕 한파운드. school
spoonful : 설탕 한숫가락.
* two cups of coffee : 커피 두잔. * a shower of rain : 한차례의 소나기.
* three cakes of soap : 비누 한장. * a bolt of thunder : 한차례의 천둥소리.
* a sheet of paper : 종이 한장. * a flash of lightning: 한차례의 번갯불.
* a roar of laughter : 한바탕 웃음. * a piece of chalk : 분필 한조각.

[ ou ]: 보이는 사람. 보이는 물건.
12. 추상명사의 수량표시
* a piece of information. (good luck, advice)
한편의 정보. (한차례의 행운, 한마디의 충고)
* a piece of news : 뉴스 한편.
* a piece of fully : 한차례의 우둔한 짓. * several cases of theft : 몇건의 절도.

13. Of + 추상명사 = 형용사구
* a man of ability = an able man. * a man of use = a useful man.

14. 전치사 + 추상명사 = 부사구
* with ease = easily : 쉽게. * in succession = successively : 연속적으로.
* with kindness = kindly : 친절하게. * in reality = really : 사실상.
* with fluency = fluently : 유창하게. * in haste = hastily : 급히.
* with safety = safely. * in earnest = earnestly : 진지하게.

15. 추상명사의 관용어법
* He is kindness itself.--+ 추상명사 + itself
all kindness | = all + 추상명사

16. An angel of a wife
* She is an angel of a wife.(of-동격, 전치사와 같은 아내,

17. Have + the + 추상명사 + to do

1. 규칙변화 Ⅰ
①무성음 [p,t,k,f, ] + s → [s]
유성음 [b,d,g,v, , 모음] + s → [z]
* desks [desks], beds [bedz].
②어미가 [s],[z],[ ],[t ],[d ] 로 발음이 되면 -es를 붙이고 [iz]로 발음함.
* ass[ s] → asses [ siz]
dish → dishes[di iz]
breeze [bri:z] → breezes [bri:ziz]
◇주의 : monarch[man k] → monarchs [man ks]
patriarch[peitria:k] → patriarchs [peitria:ks]:가장,족장

◇어미가 -ch인 단어의 복수형은 주의.
[t ]로 발음 → -es 붙이고 [iz]

③어미가 -th로 끝나는 경우
단모음 + ths → [ s]로 발음.

장모음 또는 2중모음 + ths → [ z]

mouth[mau ] → mouths[mau z]
◇mouth가 동사로 쓰일 땐 [mau ] : 먹다, 연설하다.
bath의 동사형은 bathe[bei ] : 담그다, 목욕시키다.
bathing suit [bei i ][su:t] : 수영복.
◇장모음 + r + ths에서는 ths가 [ s]로 발음.

2. 규칙변화 Ⅱ (자음 + y)
①자음 + y는 y를 i로 고친 뒤 -es
lady → lades[- z]
◇예외 : 1) 고유명사인 경우 -s만 붙인다.
Henry → Henrys.
2) 모음 + y는 -s만 붙인다.
day → days.
3) -quy로 끝나는 말은 모음 + y의 형태로 보고그냥 -s만 붙
이면 안됨. -quy는 비록 모음(u) + y의 형태이나 발음이
qu[kw] 이므로 자음 + y로 보고 y를 i로 고친뒤 -es를 붙
임.
soliloquy[s lil kwi] : 혼잣말.

3. 규칙변화 Ⅲ (자음 + o)
①자음 + o는 -es를 붙인 뒤 [z]로 발음.
potato → potatoes, hero → heroes, echo → echoes.
◇예외 : 자음 + o로 끝나는 단어 중에서 일반적으로 줄여서 된 말
(automobile → auto)의 복수형은 -es 대신 -s를 붙임.
piano(pianoforte) → pianos.
curio(curiosity) → curious : 골동품.
4. 규칙변화 Ⅳ (f, fe 형)
①어미가 -f, -fe인 단어는 f를 -v로 고친 뒤 -es를 붙인다.
half[ha: f] → halves[ha: vz]
calf[ka:f] → calves[ka:vz] : 송아지.
◇다음 단어는 -f, -fe로 끝나는 경우라도 -s만 붙일 것.
chief → chiefs, roof → roofs:지붕.
cliff → cliffs:절벽, dwarf → dwarfs:난장이.
safe → safes:금고, grief → greifs:슬픔,비탄.
proof → proofs:증거, strife → strifes: 투쟁,싸움.
gulf → gulfs:만(해안에서 사용)
②문자, 숫자, 약어의 복수형은 보통 's를 붙인다.
R → R's, 8 → 8's, M.P → M.P's
5. 불규칙 변화
①모음이 변하는 경우
man - men, woman - women[wimin], foot - feet,
goose[gu:s] - geese[gi:s]:거위. ox - oxen,
tooth - teeth, louse[laus] - lice[lais]:이.
②단수,복수형이 같은 경우
deer, sheep, swine[swain]:돼지, trout[traut]:송어,
salmon[s m n]:연어, corps[k : ] → corps[k : z]:군단(◇발음에주의)
◇foot "발"의 복수형 → feet.
"보병"의 복수형 → foot.
horse "말"의 복수형 → horses.
"기마병"의 복수형 → horse.
fish가 물고기의 종류 → fishes.
단순하게 물고기 마리수 → fish.
6. 외래어 복수
① -um, -on으로 끝나는 낱말은 -a로...
datum - data, memorandum - memoranda, medium - media:중간,매개체.
phenomenon - phenomena:현상,사건.
②어미가 -us로 끝나는 단어는 -i로...
stimulus - stimuli:자극, focus - foci:촛점. fungus - fungi:균,버섯

go-between(중매인) → go-betweens(매개자)
merry-go-round → merry-go-rounds : 회전목마.
good-for-nothing → good-for-nothings : 쓸모없는 자.
9. 상시복수
①짝 또는 두 부분이 하나를 이루는 의류 및 도구의 명칭. (보통 복수 취급)
trousers, gloves, scissors, glasses, spectacles,
tongs[ta z]:부젓가락, pants.
②복수형태의 학과명 → 형태는 복수이나 단수 취급을 함(단수동사)
economics, politics, physics, mathematics, phonetics, ethics,
statistics[st tistiks]: 통계학→단수취급, 통계(표)→복수취급.
③기타 상시복수로서 복수 취급
goods, riches:재산, valuables:귀중품, belongings,
savings:저금(saving은 구조, 절약의 뜻)
④상시복수로서 단수 취급
news, means는 단수,복수 가능.
10. 분화복수
* air : 공기 - airs : 건방진 태도.
advice : 충고 - advices : 통치.
arm : 팔 - arms : 무기, 팔들.
manner : 방법 - manners : 예절, 방법들.
ash[ ] : 재 - ashes : 유골.
custom : 습관 - customs : 관세, 세관, 습관들.
provision : 준비 - provisions : 식량.
pain : 고통 - pains : 노력, 수고.
color : 색 - colors : 기, 색깔들.
11. 상호복수 : 두개 이상의 것이 상호적으로 작용해야 할 경우에는 반드
시 복수형태를 해야한다.
* shake hands with : 악수하다.
change cars : 차를 갈아타다.
exchange seats with : 자리를 바꾸다.
be friends with : ∼와 친구사이다.
take turns : ∼교대하다.
make friends with : ∼와 친구가 되다.
exchange letters with : 편지를 교환하다.

12. 복수어미 생략 Ⅰ
①복수형 명사가 수사 다음에 와서 형용사적으로 쓰일때 단수형.
* He is two years old.
→ He has a three-year-old daughter.
②수사 + 복수명사가 형용사적으로 쓰일땐 단수 사용.
* a ten-mile race : 10마일의 경주.
a six-line gun : 6인치의 대포.
the three-power conference : 3대 강대국 회담.
two-horse carriage : 쌍두마차.
13. 복수어미 생략 Ⅱ
① dozen, score, hundred, thousand, percent 등이 수사 다음에 올때는
복수일지라도 반드시 단수형을 쓸 것.
* one dozen - three dozen.
one hundred - five hundred.
◇score : "득점"의 뜻도 있지만 20의 數도 나타냄.
two score → 40. three score and ten → 70.
② dozen, score, hundred, thousand, million 등이 막연한 수를 나타낼
땐 복수형을 사용한다.
* dozens of eggs : 여러다스의 계란.
Hundred of people : 수백명의 학생들.
scores of books : 수십권의 책.
③ pair, couple 등이 짝을 나타낼 때에는 단수,복수가능. (head는 항상단수)
two pair(s) of shoes : 구두 두켤레.
four couple(s) of hounds : 4쌍의 사냥개.
five head of oxen : 소 5마리.
◇head는 짐승의 머리수를 셀때 쓰이며 앞에 복수 수사가 와도 항상 단
수형으로 쓴다.
14. 복수형의 낱말을 단수 취급하는 경우
①학과명.
②복수형태의 국가명.
* The Netherlands, The Philippines, The United States (of America)
등의 국가명은 반드시 정관사 The를 사용하며 복수 취급한다.
단, 형태는 복수이나 단수 취급하는 것은 단수 동사를 사용한다.
③시간, 거리, 가격, 중량을 하나의 단위로 취급할때에는 단수 취급한다.
* Thirty miles is a good distance.
④복수형태의 서적이름 : 형태는 복수이나 단수 취급.
⑤부분을 나타내는 말.

16. 통성명사와 중성명사
①통성명사 : parent, monarch, spouse(배우자)
동물을 나타내는 통성명사의 대명사는 it로 받지만 사자, 개와 같이 사
나운 동물은 남성 취급을 하며 he로 받고, 고양이, 앵무새 등과 같이
약한 동물은 여성 취급하여 she로 child, baby 등은 it로 받는다.
②중성명사(무생물)의 의인화
* 강하고, 맹렬하고, 위대한 것. :남성명사 (sun, war...)
* 아름답고 우아하고 가련한 것. :여성명사 (moon, peace...)
◇국가명은 경제·사회·문화적 측면은 여성 취급하여 she로, 국토나
지리적 측면은 중성 취급하여 it로 받는다.
* England is justly proud her poets. (국가, 여성)
* America is rich in its natural resources. (국토, 중성)
17. 소유격의 형성
①사람이나 동물의 소유격은 원칙적으로 's를 쓴다.
* A man's stick. The cat's ear.
②무생물의 소유격은 [of + 명사]의 형태로 표시한다.
* The legs of the table.
③ -s로 끝나는 복수명사의 소유격은 '(apostrophe)만 붙인다.
* girls'. rings.

* father-in-law : 장인(복합명사). fathers-in-law : 장인들.

⑥동격명사의 소유격: 일반적으로 뒤에 있는 동격명사에 's를 붙인다.

④ 독립 소유격
㉠소유격('s) 다음에 오는 house, shop, office, store, place 등의
공공 건물, 상점, 집 등은 생략한다.

㉡같은 명사가 되풀이 될때 반복을 피하기 위해서 소유격 다음에 오는
명사는 생략함.
* This book is my brother's (book)
⑤ 이중소유격: a, an, this, these, that, these, some, any, no,
which, what, such, each, every 등은 소유격과 함께 나란히 쓸 수 없
고, 즉 a, an, this… + 명사 + of + 소유대명사의 형태로 써야한다.
* this my father's camera. ( X )
* this camera of my father's. ( O )
⑥ 관용적 표현.
* for mercy's sake: 제발. for conscience' sake: 양심상.
* at once wits'(wit's) end: 어찌할바를 몰라.

2. 부정관사 a, an의 용법
① one(하나)을 뜻할 때.

③ A certain(어떤)의 뜻.

3. 정관사 The의 용법
①앞에 나온 명사가 반복될 때.

②수식어구(형용사구, 형용사절)에 의해 한정이 될 때.
◇물질·추상·고유명사는 원칙적으로 정관사를 사용할 수 없으나 수식
어구로 한정, 제한이 되면 정관사 the를 사용한다.
* Water is changed into steam by heat.
* The water of this well is not good to drink. (이 우물의 물)
③문맥상 전후관계를 누구나 알 수 있는 경우.
* The post office is near the station.
④시간, 수량의 단위를 나타낼 때.
* Sugar is sold by the pound.
◇물건을 사고 팔 때 단위를 표시하는 방법은 [by the + 단위]와 같이
반드시 정관사 the 사용.
* She rented the apartment by the month.
* They hired a man by the day. (일당으로, 하루단위로).
⑤종족대표.
* The dog is a faithful animal.
⑥신체 일부를 표시할 때.
* He caught me by the hand.
⑦일반적으로 유일무이한 것에 사용.
* The sun is much larger than the moon.
* I wish to make a journey round the world.
* We are living in a busy world.
* English is a world language now.
◇ World 앞에 형용사 busy가 있을 때, world가 형용사적으로 쓰일 때
에는 the 대신 "a"를 사용함.
⑧최상급, 서수(first, second …), any, last, same 앞에서 사용.

* February is the second month of the year.

◇second가 "두번째"의 뜻으로 순서를 나타낼 땐 a second를 사용.

4. 신체일부를 표시하는 방법
① catch형의 동사.
S + V + 사람 + by the 신체일부분.
catch, seize, take, hold, grasp 등의 동사는 전치사 by를 사용한다.
* He caught me by the neck.
②strike(치다)형의 동사
S + V + 사람 + on the + 신체일부.
치다, 때리다 뜻인 strike, hit, pat, tap, touch, kiss 등의 동사.
on the + 신체일부.
* He struck me on the ear.
hit on the head.
③ look(보다)형의 동사.
S + V + 사람 + in the + 신체일부.
* I looked him in the eye.
gazed in the face.

◇붙잡다의 뜻인 동사는 by,
치다의 뜻인 동사는 on,

5. 고유명사와 정관사.
①강, 바다, 선박, 해협 등의 이름.
* The Thames. The Han River.
②반도, 군도, 산맥의 이름.
* The Korean peninsula[p ninsjul ]: 한반도.
③어떤 나라의 이름이나 지명, 국명은 일반적으로 무관사이지만 복수나
'of 한정구'가 붙으면 the를 쓴다.
* The United States of America. The Netherlands.
◇언어를 말할 땐 English, Korea처럼 관사없이 사용하지만 language를
함께 쓰면 반드시 the를 사용한다.
④관공서, 공공건물을 나타낼 때.
* The State Department: 미국무성.
◇예외: 역, 항구, 호수, 다리, 공항, 공원에는 일반적으로 the를 붙이지 않는다.
* Seoul Station. Pagoda Park. Pusan Harbor. Kimpo airport.
⑤철도, 열차, 항공기, 배, 신문, 잡지, 학회의 이름 앞에.
* The Pullman(풀만호:철도이름).
* the Queen Mary. the Royal Academy.(영국미술원)
⑥인명 앞에 성질 형용사가 올 때.
* The ambitious Caesar: 야망에 찬 시이저.
◇예외: honest, old, young, poor, little 등의 일상생활에서 흔히 쓰
이는 형용사가 인명 앞에 올 때에는 the를 사용하지 않음.
⑦고유명사가 한정될 때. (국어 이름과 특정한 말을 나타낼 때)
* London is the capital of English.
* The London of the 19th.: 19세기의 런던.

6. 관사의 위치
* so, as, too, how, however + 형용사 + 부정관사 + 명사.
* Such a work cannot be done in so short a time.

7. 관사의 생략
①호격, 가족관계를 나타낼 때.
* Water, two cups of coffee.
* Father, may I go out? * Father is looking for you, John.
②식사, 질병, 운동, 계절, 학과의 이름.
* They were having breakfast when I arrived. Because I have a
heavy breakfast. I have no appetite. The breakfast I had this
morning was too light.
◇식사명 앞에 형용사가 올 때 식사명이 형용사구나 절로 한정이 될 때
에는 관사를 사용한다.
* He is suffering from fever.

◇ ache가 들어가는 가벼운 병명 앞에는 부정관사 a를 사용한다.

◇형용사구(of-)로 수식되는 경우에는 the를 사용.
③관직, 칭호, 신분 + 고유명사일 때.
* Professor Lee: 이 교수.
◇칭호, 신분, 관직이 아닌 명사가 고유명사 앞에 올 때, 그리고
Emperor, Empress, Zar는 예외적으로 정관사 the를 사용.
* The widow Smith: 과부 스미스.
* The Emperor Napoleon: 나폴레옹 황제.
④관직, 신분, 혈통을 나타내는 말이 주격보어, 목적격보어로 쓰일 때.
Mr. Lee was appointed principal of our school.(주격보어)
⑤ a kind of ∼ , a sort of ∼ 다음에 오는 명사 앞에는 일반적으로
관사를 붙이지 않는다.
* He is a kind of gentleman.
⑥짝을 이루는 두개의 명사가 전치사 혹은 접속사로 밀접하게 연결될 때.
* We are man and wife before heaven.
* Rich and poor celebrate New year's day.
◇ the rich and the poor는 [the + 형용사]로서 복수보통명사이나
and로 연결되어 the가 생략됨.
* father and son. body and soul. arm in arm(팔짱을 끼고).
side by side(나란히)
⑦공공건물이 본래의 목적으로 쓰일 때.
* I am going to the school to see him.
* School begins at 9 O'clock
◇school이 본래의 목적인 공부, 수업등의 뜻일 땐 관사없이 사용한다.
* in school: 재학중 * go to church: 예배보러 가다.
* go to hospital: 입원하다. * go to prison: 징역살이 하다.
* at church: 예배 중. * go to sea: 선원이 되다.
* go to bed: 잠자리에 들다. * at table: 식사 중.
* at sea: 항해 중.
⑧교통, 통신수단을 나타낼 때.
* I came here by steamer.
by train. (＝in a train)
by car. (＝in a car)
* I informed him by telephone.
◇교통수단이나 통신수단을 나타낼 때에는 [by + 교통(통신)수단]의
형태이며, by 다음에 관사를 사용하지 않는다.
⑨ man 이인간, 남성의 뜻으로 woman이 여성의 뜻으로 쓰일 때.
* Man is stronger than woman.
⑩관용어구로 쓰일 때.
ⓐ전치사 + 명사.
* in the morning. * at noon : 정오에.
* in the afternoon. * at night : 밤에.
* in the evening. * at midnight : 한밤중에.
* in the daytime. * at hand : 가까이에, 손닿는 곳에.
* at dawn[d :n] : 새벽에. * in town : 도회지에서.
* at daybreak : 새벽에. * in the country: 시골에서.

* take place : 일어나다, 발생하다. * lose sight of : 시야에서 놓치다.
* take the place of ∼ : ∼을 대신하다. * keep house : 살림을 하다.
* take part in : ∼에 참가하다. * take hold of : 잡다, 쥐다.

8. 관사의 생략과 반복
* A poet and statesman is dead. (관사생략; 동일인 1명)
* A poet and a statesman are dead. (관사있음; 2명)
◇예외: 불가분의 관계가 있을 때는 두사람이라도 and 다음에 관사를
붙이지 않고 첫 명사에만 관사를 붙인다.

① father
* fatherly: 아버지의, 아버지 같은. * paternal[p t :n l]: 아버지의, 부계의.
* paternal care : 아버지의 보살핌. * fatherly love : 부성애.
② mother
* motherly: 어머니다운. * maternal[m d :n l]: 어머니의. * maternal instincts: 모성본능.
③ sun
* solar: 태양의. * sunny: 햇볕이 잘드는, 양지바른.
④ moon
* lunar[lu:n ]: 달의.
⑤ sea
* marine[m ri:n]: 바다의, 선박의, 해군의.
⑥ see
* visible: 보이는, 볼 수 있는. ≠ invisible: 보이지 않는.
⑦ hear
* audible: 들리는, 청취할 수 있는. ≠ inaudible: 들리지 않는.
⑧ eat
* eatable[i:t bl]: 먹을 수 있는. * edible[edibl]: 먹기에 좋은, 독성이 없는.
⑨ carry
* portable: 휴대할 수 있는, 이동 가능한.

* urban[ : b n]: 도시의. 도시에 있는. ≠ country → rural[ru r l]: 시골의.

10. 제거·박탈동사
rob + 대상자 + of + 물건.
deprive A of B: A에게서 B를 강탈하다.
◇참고: He stole my watch from me.
＝ I had my watch stolen. (have + 물건 + p·p)
＝ My watch was stolen.
(물건이 주어인 경우 be stolen을사용)
◇ be stolen의 주어는 도둑당한 그 물건 자체이며, be robbed of ∼ 의
주어는 사람이다.
* strip A of B: A에게서 B를 벗기다, 몰수하다.
* clear A of B: A에게서 B를 치우다, 제거하다.
* cure A of B: A에게서 B를 치료하다, 제거하다.
* relieve A of B: A로부터 B를 제거하다, 훔치다.
11. Not ∼ till (until)
* I did not know the fact, till(until) the next morning.
= It was not till the next morning that I knew the fact.
= Not till the next morning did I know the fact.
= Only after the next morning did I know the fact.
* not A till B: B하고 나서야 비로소 A하다.
◇ nott till the next morning을 문두로 도치시키면 반드시
조동사 + 주어 + 본동사의 형태로 해야한다.
12. cannot but + 원형동사
* I cannot but laugh.
= I cannot choose but laugh. (cannot choose but + 원형동사)
= I cannot help laughing. (cannot help + ∼ing)
